Hace un par de noches veía el concierto Live At La Cigale Paris 2006 de Red Hot Chili Peppers con mi hermana y mi primo, cuando de repente John Frusciante empieza a tocar una tonada familiar y se acerca al micrófono pienso ¿Va a cantar? y sí, así fue, luego nos dimos cuenta que cantaba un cover de los Bee Gees, no pudimos hacer otra cosa que sonreír mientras cantábamos a coro, éste fue sin duda un gran momento del concierto, totalmente inesperado y una verdadera grata sorpresa.

Backspacer - Debajo de todo simplemente otro ser humano

Este disco de poco más de 36 minutos de duración constituye el noveno álbum de estudio de la banda norteamericana Pearl jam , y marca un cambio de enfoque con respecto a las producciones anteriores cargadas de contenido político y mayor extensión temporal, a un enfoque mucho más personal, más directo y hasta optimista, cambio que posiblemente sorprenda pero que no podría haber venido en mejor momento.
Solo un dejo del contenido político característico de los dos trabajos anteriores de esta banda se siente en el segundo track del disco “Got Some” -This situation, which side are you on? Are you getting out? Are you dropping bombs? Have you heard of diplomatic resolve? (¿De qué lado estás en esta situación? ¿Te estás saliendo? ¿Estas lanzando bombas? ¿Has oído de solución diplomática?)-, luego Backspacer continúa con lo que viene a ser el primer sencillo, The Fixer, que a pesar de sus aparentemente esperanzadas letras parece tratarse de la inhabilidad de algunas personas de tan sólo disfrutar el momento sin tratar de arreglarlo todo, según declaró Eddie Vedder, vocalista de la agrupación.
Cualquiera que sea familiar con el film "Into the wild"y su banda sonora, realizada como un proyecto solista por Eddie, encontrará reminiscencias de este trabajo entre las canciones del último álbum de Pearl Jam, y es que “Just Breathe” bien podría haber sido (y en cierta forma es) parte de éste; según los miembros del grupo Just Breathe es lo más cercano a una canción de amor escrita por Vedder, y nos habla precisamente de lo que The Fixer denuncia…. Ser capaces de tan sólo respirar, compartir un momento y un lugar con una persona especial, estar ahí, solo ahí, sólo estar.
La sexta canción del Backspacer se convirtió en mi primera favorita de éste, con sabor a plegaria de agradecimiento y letras como “If not for love I would be drowning I’ve seen it work both ways, but I am up (Si no es por amor, estaría ahogándome lo he visto funcionar de ambas formas, pero estoy arriba); “Love ain’t love until you give it up” (El amor no es amor hasta que lo entregas) y “I can see the Light Coming through the clouds in rays” (Puedo ver la luz pasando a través de las nubes en rayos); Amongst the Waves es verdaderamente un deleite, una de las canciones más (o tal vez la más) optimistas de esta banda, perfecta para cualquier ocasión, con una excelente guitarra del señor Mike McCready que deja un muy buen sabor de boca y el deseo de seguir descubriendo más este disco que no decepciona, sino que intriga, atrapa, engancha y enamora.
Luego continúa la segunda mitad de este viaje que nos pasea por Unthought Known, canción que habla sobre la psique humana; la electrizante Supersonic; Speed of Sound, tomada desde la perspectiva de un hombre que permanece sentado en un bar después que todos se han ido, aforrándose a un sueño de luz distante, esperando el sol, esperando una palabra que nunca llega;
se extiende por Force of Nature hasta la poderosa y visceral balada The End que da fin a este grandioso lanzamiento.
Por todo esto y más Backspacer no sólo es uno de los álbumes indispensables de Pearl Jam, sino de todo el 2009.

Todo un clásico del señor Cat Stevens(ahora Yusuf Islam), de verdad una canción a-temporal que refleja una realidad presente en prácticamente todas las relaciones padre e hijo, la búsqueda de aprobación, la dificultad de comunicación y el duro proceso de convertirse en adulto con ideas y creencias propias más allá de las enseñanzas de nuestros padres. De verdad un clásico:
